‘The ERG’s a MONSTER!’ – Anna Soubry ATTACKS Tory group as she calls for People’s Vote

The now-Independent Group MP spoke following Theresa May’s 391 to 242 defeat in parliament despite the Prime Minister’s claims to have secured “legal binding” changes to the withdrawal agreement. Speaking on BBC’s Newnsight, Ms Soubry launched a scathing attack on the Prime Minister as she accused her of not listening to the warnings she had concerning the ERG. With Mrs May now suffering a second humiliating defeat in Parliament, it remains unclear what the next step in the Brexit process is although Ms Soubry has once again called for a People’s Vote.

She said on Newsnight: “This is the Prime Minister’s fault and it doesn’t give me any pleasure in saying that.

“She is the author of her own misfortune.

“We tried to make her realise that the ERG is a monster.

“If you keep feeding them they will eventually gobble you up.

“She has created this nightmare and the only way through it is to call for a People’s Vote.”

Despite convincing almost all 40 Tory MPs to change their mind, Mrs May could not overturn the historic 230 vote defeat she suffered in January.

The majority of the ERG however, held the line that was agreed following their meeting on Tuesday afternoon.

Mrs May’s deal was effectively defeated as soon as Attorney General, Geoffrey Cox announced that the changes she had secured, had not changed the risk of the UK being trapped in a backstop.

Despite the Prime Minister’s loss yesterday, Jacob Rees-Mogg, chair of the group said the risk of a soft Brexit or a second referendum may have increased.

MPs will vote today on whether to proceed with a no deal Brexit strategy and Thursday on whether the Government should call for an extension to Article 50.

In conjunction with former Brexit Secretary Steve Baker, Mr Rees-Mogg backed an amendment last night that would extend the Brexit date until May 22.

The ‘Malthouse Plan B’ amendment would push the exit date back to May wherein which the Uk would leave without a deal with the EU.
