Southampton 0-2 Liverpool LIVE updates: Express Sport brought you the latest Premier League action from St Mary’s Stadium

THAT’S ALL FOLKS

Thank you for joining me today. I’ll be back tomorrow night to bring you coverage of Chelsea’s clash with West Brom from Stamford Bridge. Could be a surprise there, Antonio Conte’s side might win…

Night!

FT: Jurgen Klopp has won 50 of his 95 Premier League games in charge of Liverpool (W50 D28 L17) – the same as Brendan Rodgers managed in his first 95 for the Reds (W50 D23 L22).

SOUTHAMPTON 0-2 LIVERPOOL

FT: Boos ring around the stadium as referee Martin Atkinson blows the full-time whistle. Excellent goals from Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah see Liverpool move to two-points behind Manchester United, while Southampton slip back into the relegation zone.

92: Remember there’s extra value in the win for Liverpool with Manchester United losing to Newcastle earlier today.

91: Not really sure why we’re bothering with addition time. Could play until midnight and Southampton wouldn’t score.

FOUR MINUTES ADDED TIME

88: Southampton fans have largely given up trying to boo Virgil van Dijk now, but there’s still time to take a pop at Dejan Lovren, who’s replaced Mohamed Salah for the closing stages.

Come on lads, give it everything ya got!

85: That would have ruined salt in the wounds. There’s a clever one-two between Lallana and Salah with the former curling just wide.

82: That’s the end of Roberto Firmino. He’s not dead, he’s being replaced by Adam Lallana for the final stages.

There’s a gentle boo for the former Southampton player. Nothing like what Van Dijk’s received. Davis replaces Romeu.

80: Now that would have taken the biscuit. VVD charges upfield before doing a coupe of step overs. There’s a rye smile from the Dutchman as he’s eventually tackled.

79: The game has come alive somewhat since Shane Long’s introduction. Southampton have the handbrake off now and that’s leading to more chances at both ends.

The ball breaks for Sadio Mane, who can’t buy a goal for love nor money as he swipes it wide.

76: Mohamed Salah misses. That’s a headline in itself. Firmino’s initial shot is blocked and the Egyptian bangs the rebound into the side-netting.

Shane Long on for James Ward-Prowse.

73: It’s flat as a pancake at St Mary’s Stadium. Saints have shown no sign of getting back into the game since the break. It’s all rather easy for Virgil van Dijk and co.

70: Not wanting Wijnaldum to feel self-conscious, Can has a dreadful long-range effort of his own that’s probably just landed on the moon.

67: Wijnaldum doesn’t score away from home. 50 appearances away and 0 goals. So you don’t need me to tell you how that 25-yard effort went…

64: It’s Jurgen Klopp’s turn to make a change. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who’s been pretty anonymous today, is replaced by James Milner.

63: Hoedt nearly flicks JWP’s low cross goal wards but he’s put a little too much on it and it rolls out.

60: Nothing’s happening for Saints, so Pellegrino listens to Souness’ advice and makes a change. Live-wire Boufal replaces Lemina.

Now get down that tunnel and have some Lemsip, Mario!

57: It’s been a pretty grim weekend for Southampton. They’ve had to watch Newcastle, Swansea and Huddersfield all collect maximum points. It all leaves them inside the relegation zone – one point from safety.

54: He doesn’t miss many. Sadio Mane’s acrobatic volley falls to Mohamed Salah, who blazes over. Looks like Lemina is battling on but I’m not sure it’s worth having a 60% fit player in the middle of the park.

51: Oh dear. Mario Lemina has hit the deck. It’s not an injury but the midfielder was sick before today’s game and can’t continue. Poor fella.

48: As we all know, Liverpool’s biggest danger now is themselves. Emre Can is the first to implode after being caught in possession and committing a foul to win it back. Booked.

SOUTHAMPTON 0-2 LIVERPOOL

45: Back underway folks. No changes for either side, although Graeme Souness has ordered Mauricio Pellegrino to make some alterations after the 60-minute mark. I wonder if he’s been listening…

TWITTER ROUND-UP

Paddy: Karius looking solid AF today, which means there’s a massive rick coming. Probably throw the ball into his own net in a minute.

Seema: 20th goal after the opener and 11 assists in all competitions this season for Firmino who wasn’t even purchased as an out & out striker! Tireless work ethic!

Matt: Jamie Redknapp in October: “Liverpool haven’t really got that out-and-out goalscorer. You need someone like Lukaku that’s going to get you 25 goals a season.”

Goals this season:

Salah – 28   Firmino – 20   Lukaku – 19

HT: What can you say really? Liverpool haven’t been at their best, but two golden moments and a mistake from Hoedt see them boast a two-goal advantage at the break.

Mohamed Salah has been directly involved in 29 Premier League goals this season (22 goals, 7 assists); the most by a Liverpool player in their debut season for the club in the competition.

ONE MINUTE ADDED TIME

44: That’s such a blow for Southampton. The hosts were on the front-foot and really looked like grabbing an equaliser before the break. But, as ever with Liverpool, a moment of brilliance has been the difference.

SOUTHAMPTON 0-2 LIVERPOOL – SALAH

42: Forget Philippe Coutinho and Sadio Mane, who needs them when you have Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah.

This is a fabulous goal against the run of play.

Firmino turns provider with an exquisite back-heel flick for Salah to slot home.

41: Bertrand’s having TAA on toast today. Again he wins the battle down the left and tees a cross up for JWP, who nods tamely at Karius.

38: Booked! Matip is shown a yellow for wrestling Tadic to the floor.

Southampton are going for this. They want an equaliser before the break and nearly grab one as Liverpool fall asleep at the back. Carrillo is penalised for offside before he can do any damage.

35: Thinking about it, we’ve got three double-barrel names on the field today. TAA, JWP, AOC, VVD…

33: Chance! JWP (my lazy abbreviation of James Ward-Prowse) sends a cracking cross into January signing Carrillo, who climbs above Alexander-Arnold before nodding straight at Karius.

The German stopper then tips Hojbjerg’s lashed half-volley over the bar.

30: Firmino wants a penalty and he’s got a point because Stephens has his hands on the Brazilian’s shoulders. Nothing given.

28: Really sloppy from Liverpool. They’ve completely switched off after their opener and it’s giving Saints a lot of encouragement.

25: Firmino is left red-faced after narrowly keeping the ball in play around the byline but subsequently tripping over it. I guess he’s still having the last laugh…

22: Southampton WILL score today. You can sense it. Robertson fails to reach Romeu’s perfectly-flighted pass. Hojbjerg chests down the angled ball but is denied at close range by Karius.

19: Gasps around the stadium as Salah brings down a lofted ball forward, but referee Martin Atkinson correctly spots the use of his arm.

16: Jack Stephens meets a clearance but his long-ranger drifts wide. Three goals in three matches? Why not!

15: Roberto Firmino has scored 20 goals in all competitions in a single season for the first time since 2013-14 with Hoffenheim (22).

12: Bertrand reaches the byline but his whipped cross is cleared by VVD at the near post. Southampton don’t look too rattled. Can’t see the floodgates opening.

9: So what’s Plan B? Presumably Southampton’s tactics were to frustrate Liverpool and hit them on the counter. No obvious change from Mauricio Pellegrino after Firmino’s opener.

SOUTHAMPTON 0-1 LIVERPOOL – FIRMINO

6: And there’s the breakthrough!

It all started from that corner Hojbjerg won, and it’s a painful individual error from Hoedt which allows Roberto Firmino to open the scoring.

The defender gifts the ball to Mohamed Salah, who squares it to Firmino to stroke past McCarthy.

5: Hojbjerg, probably Liverpool’s next signing, chases a lost cause and wins his side a corner. Jack Stephens is the danger man but the delivery is poor.

4: Nervy stuff from Saints. McCarthy scuffs his clearance, Hoedt can’t control a terrible backpass from Lemina but just about holds Firmino off.

2: Liverpool are wearing their sickeningly orange strip as Salah wins the first corner of the afternoon. There’s a boo as Virgil van Dijk wanders up and a cheers as he misses the header.

SOUTHAMPTON 0-0 LIVERPOOL

1: And we’re off folks! Huddersfield beat Bournemouth, Newcastle beat Manchester United, so Liverpool are looking to avoid being the third upset of the day.

Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk is expected to start on his first return to St Mary’s since his £75million January move. Ragnar Klavan, Alberto Moreno and Adam Lallana have recovered from injuries but Joe Gomez is unlikely to feature because of a minor knee problem.
