M6 traffic latest: M6 closed after serious accident – traffic queuing for MILES


The southbound carriageway has been shut down between Junction 14 A34 (Stafford North) to Junction 13 A449 (Stafford South) since about 3.20am this morning. Drivers have been warned to expect delays for the rest of the morning as it remains closed. A Highways England spokesman said: “The M6 in the West Midlands is closed near Stafford due to a police led incident between J14 and J13. “Central Motorway Police Group are in attendance.

“Road users travelling from the north west heading to London may wish to consider exiting the M6 at J15, travelling along the A50 towards the M1 to travel south towards the M25 and London.

“Road users are advised to allow extra time for their journeys and may wish to consider alternative routes.”

The entry slip road on to the southbound carriageway at Junction 14 is also closed off. 

The northbound carriageway was also blocked between Junction 13 and Junction 14, but reopened with some speed restrictions in place.

Some motorists reported being trapped on the motorway for more than three hours as tailbacks form for miles. 

A Central Motorway Police Group (CMPG) spokesman said: “We are currently dealing with a collision on the M6 south between junctions 14 and 13, diversions are in place, please use alternate routes this morning.

“Thank you for your understanding and patience while this incident is ongoing.”

Local bus services also reported disruption. 

A First Potteries spokesman said: “Please be aware that due to a serious accident the M6 is closed between J14-j13 Southbound, they have closed the slip road at J15 so all traffic will divert Via the A34 and Stafford town centre will be gridlocked it will be effecting service 101.”

A diversion has been put in place. 

Drivers at Junction 14 are advised to take the exit to the A34 east and continue along the A34, Greyfriars/Queensway to its junction with the A449, Wolverhampton Road.

They are then advised to take the exit to the A449 south and continue to its junction with M6 Junction 13.
