M4 CLOSED: Four air ambulances rush to 'serious collision' – 'life-threatening' injuries


Four air ambulances have rushed to the scene on the eastbound carriageway between junction 14 at Hungerford and Junction 13 at Chieveley.

The M4 has been closed with traffic at a complete standstill, which is now being diverted off the motorway near junction 13.

Three other people have been taken to hospital following the collision. 

South Central Ambulance Services tweeted: “We have taken three patients with life-threatening injuries to hospital, along with three further patients with less serious injuries following the collision between a lorry and minibus.”

Thames Valley Police warned in a statement the closure of the eastbound carriageway is likely to reemain in place for “several hours”. 

It added officers are working to turn affected motorists atround and advised those in traffic to remain in their vehicles. 

Thames Valley Police said: “Thames Valley Police is currently on the scene of a serious road traffic collision on the M4 in West Berkshire.

“At around 12.20pm today (11/10) there was a collision between a heavy goods vehicle and a minibus.

“The road is currently closed eastbound between junction 14 at Hungerford and junction 13 at Chieveley.

“The closure on the eastbound carriageway is likely to remain in place for several hours.”

It continued: “The westbound carriageway was temporarily closed to allow the air ambulance access to the scene and has since re-opened.

“The eastbound carriageway is likely to be closed for a significant amount of time and officers are working to turn affected motorists around.

“Please remain in your vehicles if you are stuck in the traffic as emergency services require access to the M4.

“Further updates will be published once available.”

Motorist James Lloyd wrote on Twitter: “M4 closed due to worst accident I’ve ever seen in many years of driving.

“Avoid area and if you’re caught in the tail back be patient.

“I promise you don’t want to get past it until emergency services are finished.”

Highways England later tweeted traffic is now being released past the scene of the accident. 

Once all tra[[ed vehicles have been released, the eastbound carriageway bwetween junctions 13 and 14 will remain closed for TVP Roads Policing to begin its investigation, recovery and clean-up work.
