Lewis Hamilton: Bold prediction made by Mercedes chief ahead of Australian Grand Prix

Hamilton begins his challenge for a sixth world championship on Sunday as he races in the Australian Grand Prix.

The British superstar won his fifth crown last year ahead of Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel.

In doing so, he became the joint-second most successful driver of all time alongside Juan Manuel Fangio.

Ahead of him is the legendary Michael Schumacher, who won seven titles in a glittering career.

Hamilton still has some way to go before he reaches the heights of Schumacher, who is still ahead of him on race wins by 18.

However, Wolff believes that the 34-year-old has what it takes to become the greatest driver of all time.

Speaking ahead of this Sunday’s season opener, the Mercedes boss credited Hamilton’s work ethic as the key behind his greatness.

“There are athletes who, after many successes, are no longer able to motivate themselves because they have made good money and are recognised,” he explained.

“But it’s different for Lewis.

“He manages to reinvent and reinvigorate himself over and over again.

“It’s a remarkable ability that he has.

“He can become the greatest racing driver of all time and he knows it.”

Wolff’s prediction was echoed by Hamilton’s former team-mate, Nico Rosberg.

The 2016 champion declared that he believes Hamilton is one of the greatest that the sport has ever seen.

“Lewis probably has a bit more natural talent than Michael,” he said.

“Lewis has one of the greatest natural talents our sport has ever seen, so he makes the difference.”
